Graceland University Esports Wins Iowa Championship

The Graceland University esports team has been named champions of the Iowa division B esports league at the GG Leagues tournament at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, Nov. 16. Read more in this news release. Graceland Esports offers opportunities for students to participate in a competitive environment and represent their university with pride in a new and exciting way. Esports represents yet another way for a diverse range of students to connect with their university and experience even greater value from their college experience. It's about more than just playing video games. Esports students are serious about the game and must develop and hone the necessary skills to be successful as a team. Esports even has direct application in the global workforce beyond graduation.

The honor roll lists for Graceland University's 2019 fall term have been announced. Students with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.64 are named to the dean's list. Graceland commends the students who have devoted their efforts and talents to their academic success!

Virgil Walker Jr. Named Player of the Week

Graceland University junior forward Virgil Walker Jr. was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Basketball player of the week Monday, Dec. 2. The Yellowjackets defeated Mount Mercy University in Closson Center 107-77, and Walker played a big factor in the win. He had a game-high 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. He played 31 minutes in Graceland's rout of the Mustangs and went 9 of 12 from the field, much of which were in the first half as he helped the Yellowjackets score 51 points as a team. Walker is ranked in several NAIA Division I categories statisically including 15th in points per game (19.88), 16th in defensive rebounds per game (6.63), 19th in total rebounds per game (8.75), and 21st in field goal percentage (.600). This season, he is the team leader in both points and rebounds. He is also second on the team in assists and blocks. Each week, award winners are nominated by members of the Heart and selected by a voting panel of member institution Sports Information Directors.

Graceland University Students Earn Roles in Theatre Production of "The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People"

Graceland University Theatre students earned roles in "The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People," under the direction of Graceland Associate Professor of Theatre Tracy Salter. "The Importance of Being Earnest..." was originally written as a comedy of wit and character satirizing the Victorian British class system and social pretenses. This performance was an updated approach to the production, which comments on a still prevalent class system and the values that support it.

Graceland University Students Inducted into Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society

The Graceland University chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, inducted nine new members Oct. 17. Graceland's chapter, the Alpha Phi Upsilon chapter, was founded in 2017, and these nine new members are part of the third class of inductees. Sigma Tau Delta was founded in 1924 to confer distinction for high achievement in English language, literature and writing, and to foster literacy and all aspects of the discipline of English. With over 850 chapters across the U.S. and abroad, Sigma Tau Delta is the most active honors organization in the field and one of the largest members of the Association of College Honor Societies. Candidates for Sigma Tau Delta must have a strong interest in the study of English, an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and at least 12 credits (semester hours) in English with an average of at least a 3.0 GPA or better.

Georgia Seagraves Presents on Advocacy and Latinidades

Georgia Seagraves, a Hispanic studies major at Graceland University, co-lead a presentation/discussion with Assistant Professor of Spanish Jonathan Montalvo as part of the Marshalltown Community College Latinx Leadership Initiative in a partnership with Iowa 4-H. Their discussion centered on latinidades, experiential learning and advocacy for the Latinx/Hispanic cultures and communities.

Graceland University Student-Athletes Honored With Freeman Award

One Graceland student-athlete in each varsity sport was honored with the annual Freeman Award, an honor presented to a Graceland senior who, in their junior year, earned the highest cumulative GPA in their sport. This year's medals were presented before kickoff at the homecoming football game. A special plaque with the student's name will be placed in their coach's office to commemorate the studens' achievements, and as a reminder of the important role a coach plays in a student's collegiate life.

Graceland University Students Serve as Student Ambassadors

Student Ambassadors at Graceland are an extension of the admissions team. They hold a high level of responsibility and leadership as they represent Graceland to campus visitors. They are responsible for giving campus tours, answering questions during large-group student panels and hosting visiting students from out of town. Through this experience, Graceland University student ambassadors learn valuable leadership and interpersonal skills that will assist them throughout the college experience and beyond.

Graceland University Men's Volleyball Student-Athletes Named NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2019 Daktronics-NAIA Men's Volleyball Scholar-Athlete Team, and it includes student-athletes from Graceland University. In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended two full years as a non-transfer or one full year as a transfer student.

Graceland University Students Serve as Peer Mentors

Graceland University Peer Mentors participated in mentoring first-year students during the 2018-19 academic year. Peer mentors completed a training program before the year began in order to provided essential support and leadership to the Graceland University incoming class through intentional outreach. They led class lab sessions and provided a wide range of support both in and out of the classroom.

Meredith Salois Receives Area Award in International Studies

Meredith Salois was recognized by the History/Political Science Department with its Area Award in International Studies at a special ceremony April 8, 2019. The department houses and administers the major in International Studies. In the Fall 2017 semester, Meredith was a full-time student at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, in partial fulfilment of the study abroad requirement of this major. Meredith is graduating this semester with majors in international studies and English, along with minors in history, communication, political science and peace studies.

Abigail Stoetzel Receives Area Award in International Studies

Abigail Stoetzel was recognized by the History/Political Science Department with its Area Award in International Studies at a special ceremony April 8, 2019. The department houses and administers the major in International Studies. In the Fall 2018 semester, Abigail was a full-time student at the University of Granada, Spain, in partial fulfilment of the study abroad requirement of this major. Abigail is graduating this semester as a double major in international studies and Spanish, along with a minor in communication.

Graceland University Students Receive Juried Art Exhibition Awards

Graceland University students were named as award winners in the Department of Art Annual 2019 Juried Student Art Exhibition. The Graceland juried exhibition consists of artwork submitted by students in designated categories. It is judged by an individual or panel, according to certain measures. Graceland students entered works in one of three categories: two dimensional art, sculpture and graphic design.

Dakota Buttrey Named Heart Player of the Week

Graceland University Softball's Dakota Buttrey was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) Player of the Week Monday, Apr. 22. Buttrey smashed five homeruns in five straight games this week, a feat that had yet to be accomplished in the NAIA this season. She built upon her new career homerun record, now sitting at 31, and is the new Graceland University record holder for RBIs in a season with 44. Buttery recorded 14 RBIs and 10 runs on 13 hits on the week. Each week, award winners are nominated by members of the Heart and selected by a voting panel of member institution Sports Information Directors.
